About Bergen County, New Jersey

When you buy a home, you also buy into a community.  Bergen County offers a range of lifestyles, excellent schools and strong communities.  New Jersey is also known as the Garden State for its many parks and playgrounds.

Bergen County, in the Northeast corner of New Jersey, is located

  • Minutes away from New York City; just across the George Washington Bridge which spans from the shores of Manhattan Island to the New Jersey Palisades.

Bergen County has over 70 different municipalities and a population of about 860,000. It offers many diverse lifestyles, for example:

  • Urban in Fort Lee, Cliffside Park and Edgewater
  • Dense suburban with houses on similar sized properties in Teaneck, New Milford, Bergenfield and Dumont
  • Sprawling suburban with large homes located on spacious properties in Tenafly, Haworth, Demarest, Cresskill, Old Tappan and Rivervale
  • Luxury estates in Alpine, Englewood, Cresskill and Saddle River

Many of the high rise buildings along the "The Gold Coast" have magnificent Hudson River views of Manhattan and the George Washington Bridge.  Most towns have good commercial centers while other towns offer few services and a more rural feeling. Some towns even allow horses, depending upon the size of the property!

Some of the larger towns offer a wide variety of housing options within the town itself. In Tenafly, for example, some of your choices might include:

  • Small apartment in a cooperative building
  • Larger apartment in a condominium near downtown
  • Small, medium or large single family home
  • Spacious, newer luxury townhouse
  • Older home on a large property
  • New luxury home on the East Hill; typically on an acre of property

We have a range of sizes and styles of homes for you to choose from:

  • Center Hall Colonial
  • Contemporary
  • Tudor
  • Split Level
  • Bi-levels (also known as high ranches)
  • Cape Cods
  • Ranches
  • Antique homes

Bergen County was origionally settled by the Dutch and English and was farmland. The area became more fully developed after the opening of the George Washington Bridge in the 1930's; another housing boom occurred at the end of World War II.  Today, new homes are often tucked in older, established neighborhoods; there are a few developments of newer homes which used to be garden centers or golf courses, for example.

There are many major shopping areas in Bergen County, located primarily in Paramus.  There are five large shopping malls:

  • The Fashion Center
  • The Bergen Mall
  • The Paramus Mall
  • Riverside Square Mall
  • Garden State Mall
  • Routes 4 and 17 in Paramus are a shopper's delight with many national chain stores, independent stores and smaller malls.

Commuting to New York City is important and there are many major highways including:

  • Palisades Parkway
  • The Garden State Parkway
  • State Routes 9W, 17, 4 and 208

Drivers can access Manhattan from the GWB or the Midtown Tunnel.  You can also get to NYC by bus, rail and ferry.
